Types of LV Distribution Systems - Radial System: Simple and cost-effective, with power flowing from a single source to loads. However, a fault can disrupt downstream consumers. - Ring Main System: Forms a closed loop, allowing power to flow from multiple directions, improving reliability. - Interconnected System: Combines multiple feeders for redundancy, commonly used in critical facilities. Key Considerations - Load Balancing: Ensures even distribution across phases to prevent overheating and voltage drops. - Voltage Regulation: Maintains stable voltage levels within permissible limits (±5-10% of nominal voltage). - Safety Compliance: Adherence to standards (e.g., IEC, NEC) ensures protection against electric shocks and fire hazards. - Energy Efficiency: Use of energy-efficient transformers, smart meters, and power factor correction devices reduces losses. Applications LV distribution systems power homes, offices, schools, hospitals, and small industries. They also integrate renewable energy sources (e.g., solar PV) and support smart grid technologies for real-time monitoring and automation. Challenges - Fault Detection: Identifying and isolating faults quickly to minimize downtime. - Aging Infrastructure: Upgrading outdated systems to improve reliability. - Harmonics and Power Quality: Mitigating distortions caused by non-linear loads (e.g., inverters, LED lighting).
